Papercraft GTA 4 Diorama – Niko Belic on the run. Again.

Another day, another papercraft. What about building a tiny Grand Theft Auto 4 diorama? I found an interesting one and want to show it to you.

The game

When the game was released more than ten years ago for PC, Rockstar had to fight a lot of bugs – Not only bugs like a mission that can’t be finished. No, the game simply didn’t start – for weeks!

Despite this, the game was remarkable, and it still is. After GTA Vice City, the graphics and the atmosphere were mind-blowing. See the original trailer here. The main story is about Niko Belic, a guy from eastern Europe roughing up the Mafia in Liberty City.

Funny fact: Until now, I didn’t finish the game even though I played it three or four times. In the last mission, you repeatedly have to press a particular key to get back into a helicopter. On the PC version, it doesn’t work, and you fail the mission every time 🙁

Years ago, I happened to find the pattern of a paper model for a lovely GTA 4 diorama. It shows Niko Belic on the run after killing (accidentally? intentionally? Who knows…) a civilian what happens quite frequently in the game. If you are interested in building it yourself, find the GTA 4 design on Tubbypaws. Unlike the Companion Cube, you have almost no repetitive parts here, and building it is straight forward.

As you can see, there are a couple of components, and you can nicely see the progress you make while building.

Pro Tips

  • Don’t score the top layer of the paper for easier folding. The white paper will shine through later
  • Cut the tabs a little on right angles because otherwise the will overlap which can create gaps you can’t hide later
  • I recommend you to print it on thicker paper (160g/m²)

Let’s make it a City

GTA Paper Model Building set

Look at this! It looks already like a city, doesn’t it? Well.. maybe not yet. Let’s move on.

The Train is coming in

The urban railway attached to the first floor consists of rails, a pillar, and a train. The railways are challenging because the folding lines on the pattern are slightly too thick to fold them precisely. But with some push and pull, it went together.

The Hard Part

Now we are talking! We get closer and closer to the finale. Let’s do the last objects, which are a car, a corpse, and Niko Belic himself. Those are tricky ones because they are small and you must fold the edges very carefully. Otherwise, they won’t fit completely, and it will look sloppy.

See how innocent it looks now that it’s done…

Finale

After all the work which took me about two hours (I know, you could do that much faster), the model was completed, and it looks so amazing! It’s this tinyness and the small details that reflect the atmosphere of Grand Theft Auto. Even the backside of the building has been designed with love. I am looking forward to building the next one!

All in all, it was a lot of fun to build this diorama and it is definitely suitable for beginners. Even a child could build it, but I am not sure if the topic is appropriate for children 😉 Hopefully, you enjoyed this post and now you feel like building it yourself.
