Indiana Jones the Fate of Atlantis Necklace Finale

Sophia Hapgood’s necklace from Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis is completed! After months of back and forth, I finally made it. Let me show you the last steps and the magnificent result.

I have made the amulet completely from brass. Except for the glue for the spiral, there is no plastic used. Also, besides the black parts, there is no color used. It’s all done by acetic acid and salt-water. I think this is exceptional for this particular prop replica. If you should know another one, please let me know.

Guys, the locket is finally done. It was a lot of work and learnings for me as it was the first time I worked with metal in this way. In the last article, we revised the finish, and in the end, it looked like this:

Pretty damn cool, isn’t it? 🙂 The spiral has been done with an ordinary earring treated with vinegar and salt.

A Chain for Sophia Hapgood’s Necklace

It was a pain to get a suitable one. Online, you get usually necklaces made of steel with a surface covered with brass. Unfortunately, they mostly use brass with high copper content, so that it almost looks like rose gold. If you try to age it with vinegar, it turns red – not exactly the effect we want to achieve.

Aging bras trials

I’ve tried a lot, I can tell you! It was impossible to find a chain that had the right shape, so I finally ended up with a chain that looked somehow genuine. Below you can see the chain before it has been treated with vinegar.

And here you can see how the chain looked after one hour in vinegar and salt, and one night on the balcony.

It doesn’t fit the game perfectly, but it’s definitely close enough. The chain makes the medallion from the Fate of Atlantis look as it if had been cleaned after lying hundreds if not thousands of years in the ocean – But not too much, of course. It should still look shiny 🙂

Let’s make it screen accurate

When you have seen the amulet in the game, you might have noticed that it has black eyes and a black mouth.

How can we achieve this? Fortunately, I read an article about the “World’s Blackest Black” months ago. Check Google for “Vantablack” if you are interested in the whole story. Long story short, you can buy a slightly lighter black online at Culturehustle.

The application is quite simple. You paint one layer, two hours later the second one, and after twelve hours the final layer.

Due to the tiny parts I painted, I skipped the primer. Compare the result with the screenshot above. The effect is stunning!

Is Black 3.0 – the world’s blackest black really black?

Nevertheless, I am a little disappointed with the color. Don’t get me wrong. It’s amazing black. But in direct light, you see the shades. I think there are physical boundaries you can’t overcome. All in all, I wouldn’t spend another €50.

And now, lean back and enjoy the show!

To be improved

Even though I am excited about the result, there are some things I need/want to change for the next version:

  • The spiral is actually a double spiral, and here got accidentally mirrored.
  • The forehead has the wrong proportions.
  • Although I love the chain as it is right now, I would like to find a more fitting one.
  • Next time, I want to do it super glossy.

Thank you for reading the article (And the whole series?). Leave a comment if you like it. Today is Sunday and I wish you a great evening and a good start into the week.
