Indiana Jones Fate of Atlantis Locket #3 Make the Body

We are approaching the goal! Let’s do the next step for the necklace from Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis. This time, we bring the pieces together. Let’s go!

This is how we do it: The articles of this series are about how I created the first version of the locket. I already found things that I can improve in the second version. So when I finish this series, I will create an all-in-one-tutorial that allows you to build your Fate of Atlantis-medallion yourself without making my mistakes. Deal? 🙂

What we have so far

After a lot of work, I finally sawed out all the required pieces for the medallion. The idea of the locket is to put it together from layers, which are the base, the face, the nose, and the forehead.

The next step was to put the parts together. But first, I had to align the pieces. Compared to sawing, that’s a piece of cake, I can tell you.

Pro-Tip: From time to time, you should check if the pieces still match with the template. Otherwise, you may irreversibly damage the shape. For adjusting the edges, I used some fine files, of which I bought a cheap package. The trickiest parts of this step are the mouth and the eyes since the sharp angles are difficult to reach.

Types of metal joints

There are several possibilites to attach metal pieces to each other:

  • Using normal glue. Many types of glue promise that you can bond metal with them. I tried it, and it is only half true. In fact, the pieces do stick together, but you don’t need a lot of force to loosen them.
  • Solder the pieces together. I have to admit I didn’t try it out. You need a lot of experience if you want to solder not only two wires but two relatively large pieces. Most likely, the joint is more robust than an adhesive joint, but it was too risky for my first try.
  • Special metal glue – this was my first idea, and this is the path I have taken. And it works.

First, I attempted to test if it works at all. I put two pieces together and fixed them overnight with a screw clamp.

I used a two-component adhesive that’s called QuikSteel, which is unexpectedly strong. You get it for a few dollars on Amazon. With my bare hands, I am unable to separate the two pieces from each other. Obviously, my initial intuition was right 🙂

How to glue metal

For this project I use brass, but it should work for steel, aluminum, etc. as well.

  1. Roughen the surface a little, so the glue has greater support
  2. Clean the pieces carefully. You can use alcohol, nail polish remover, or special cleaning agents.
  3. Apply two-component adhesive. You should read carefully the instructions in order to get the best result. You need very little glue. In the following example, I used far too much, as you will see.
  4. After you have adjusted the pieces, you should fix them with a screw clamp. This is again a tricky part because the parts slip easily.
  5. Depending on the adhesive, you need to wait a few hours before you can continue. To be on the safe side, you should wait for one day.

The following pictures show how I attached the forehead to the nose.

On the pictures above, you can see that I used too much metal adhesive. For this reason, there is now a gap between the pieces. But that’s the way it is 🙂 One day later, I filed the pieces so that the edges match.

Now, that all pieces are attached, we are closer to the goal than ever before – the body of the locket is done! It’s not yet shiny, but it’s a rough diamond which we only have to free 🙂

Because I didn’t file carefully enough, some dents can be seen on the edges. That is somewhat annoying, but fortunately, it is supposed to look ancient later on, so it’s not bad at all. Besides this, I used too much glue almost everywhere – lesson learned.
